What is NIPUN Bharat?

NIPUN Bharat (National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy) is a flagship mission launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India on 5th July 2021. The mission aims to ensure that every child in India attains foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) by the end of Grade 3, by 2026-27.

Objectives of NIPUN Bharat Mission

  1. Ensure that all children in Grades 1 to 3 achieve foundational literacy and numeracy by Class 3.
  2. Improve language, reading, writing, and number skills in children aged 3 to 9.
  3. Build a joyful and activity-based learning environment in classrooms.
  4. Promote inclusive education for all children, including those with special needs.
  5. Encourage parent and community involvement in a child’s learning journey.

Features of NIPUN Bharat

  1. Targets children in Balvatika (pre-primary), Grades 1, 2, and 3.
  2. Focus on mother tongue/regional language as the medium of instruction in early grades.
  3. Play-based and interactive teaching to make learning fun.
  4. Learning outcomes and benchmarks defined at each grade level.
  5. Use of technology and digital resources to support teachers and students.
  6. Regular assessments to track progress and intervene early.

Foundational Literacy includes:

  2. Counting and comparison
  3. Basic addition and subtraction
  4. Shapes, patterns, and measurements

Implementation Timeline

The NIPUN Bharat Mission is being implemented in phases from 2021 to 2026-27. Each year, states and schools work toward reaching annual goals, with constant monitoring and support from the central and state governments.

Nationwide Reach

NIPUN Bharat is being implemented in all states and UTs, covering:

  1. Over 25 crore children
  2. Teachers from 9 lakh+ schools
  3. In collaboration with NCERT, SCERTs, and education departments

Progress & Monitoring

Progress is tracked through:

  1. NAS (National Achievement Survey)
  2. PGI (Performance Grading Index)
  3. State-level monitoring tools
  4. Use of DIKSHA, Vidya Samiksha Kendra, and mobile apps for real-time tracking
