PRASHAD/PRASAD Scheme 2026

The Ministry of Tourism launched the PRASHAD Scheme in the year 2014-15. Its full form is “Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive". It aims to plan, integrate, and connect India’s important cultural heritage sites to provide a seamless overall tourist experience.

Aims of PRASHAD Scheme 

  1. Economic development of surrounding areas of pilgrimage sites for employment generation. 
  1. Focusing on pro-poor tourism by ensuring that the generated revenue stays in the local community. 
  1. Building world-class infrastructure and attracting tourists globally. 
  1. Making local communities aware of the benefits tourism brings.  
  1. Educating locals about being welcoming to new people, especially tourists. 
  1. Promoting local culture like arts, food, attire, and rituals. 
  1. Developing India's position as a “Vishwa Guru.” 

Functioning and Funding of PRASHAD Scheme 

The Ministry of Tourism has delegated the work to a body named Mission Directorate. Its work includes identifying important pilgrimage sites and cities to take under this project. It is also responsible for striking coordination with states, union territories, and other stakeholders. 

It is 100% public funding for some eligible project parts. It also welcomes voluntary contributions made through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) AND Public Private Partnership (PPP). 

Important Components of PRASHAD Scheme 

  • Infrastructure – The main focus is on improving land and the quality of roads to make them pothole-free as well as building bridges, flyovers, and highways. 
  • Connectivity – It focuses on rail, road, and air connectivity but integrating all three and strengthening connectivity networks. 
  • Experience – The aim is to ensure higher standards of accommodation, hygienic public toilets, and navigation/direction boards at all important places. 
  • Preservation – Ensuring the restoration of all important pilgrimage sites and maintaining a strong waste disposal mechanism by promoting responsible tourism. 
  • Spirituality – Educating foreign travelers on the spiritual traditions and practices that originated in India.  
  • Running yoga and meditation campaigns to brand India as the original source of spirituality. 
  • Empowerment – Empowering local communities through various skill developments campaigns and livelihood opportunities generated because of tourism and travel. 
  • Sustainability – It not only focuses on promotion of tourism but also safeguarding the environment by using green technologies like electronic buses.
