What is the National Nutrition Mission? 

National Nutrition Mission, also known as ‘Poshan Abhiyaan,’ is an Indian Government flagship program launched to solve malnutrition issues prevalent in the country. This program has been rolled out in 36 states and Union Territories across the country. 

The National Nutrition Mission launched is a flagship program launched by the Indian Government in 2018 to tackle malnutrition issues across the country. This program, popularly known as ‘Poshan Abhiyaan’ targets malnourished children aged between zero to six years, adolescents, and lactating mother to improve their nutritional status within a set time frame. This main goal of this scheme is to provide nourishment, reduce stunting and wasting among young children and to lower anemia levels in women, children, and adolescent girls. Who is included in the National Nutrition Mission?

The below-listed category of citizens is included in the National Nutrition Mission:

  1. Children aged up to six years of age
  1. Pregnant Women
  1. Lactating Mothers
  1. Adolescents

Objectives of the National Nutrition Mission

The objectives of the National Nutrition Mission are as given below:

  1. To reduce and prevent stunting in children up to six years of age.
  1. To reduce and prevent under-nutrition or under-weight in children up to six years of age.
  1. To reduce and prevent anemia among young children aged between 6 months and 59 months.
  1. To reduce and prevent low-birth weight amongst children.
  1. To reduce and prevent anemia among women and adolescent girls.

Features of the National Nutrition Mission

The below-listed are some of the features of the National Nutrition Mission:

  1. National Nutrition Mission or Poshan Abhiyaan was launched by the Indian Government on 8th March 2018 with the aim of supervising and providing nutrition related guidance across ministries in India.
  1. The Poshan Abhiyaan works as an apex body that monitors, supervises, and fix targets related to nutrition in India.
  1. This program focuses on spreading awareness about mal-nutrition and other related issues in India and works on providing practical solutions for the same.
  1. The scheme uses an ICT-based real-time monitoring system to track and improve nutritional status across the country.
  1. It involves Anganwadi's to monitor growth of the children and encourages the Anganwadi workers by providing incentives for achieving the set nutrition-related targets and using digital tools.
  1. Under this scheme, the government has also introduced height measurement of children at Anganwadi Centres.
  1. Under this scheme, the government has also set up National Nutrition Centres and promoted community participation through Jan Andolan.
  1. The government also offers incentives to States and Union Territories for achieving the target.
