Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (IGNWPS) 2026

The Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (IGNWPS) was launched in 2009 under the National Social Assistance Program (NSAP). It provides social and financial security to widows in low-income households. IGNWPS is under the aegis of the Ministry of Rural Development. It is a sub-scheme of the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) which comes under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP). 

Benefits under the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme

Widows aged between 40 to 79 years are eligible for a monthly pension of Rs.300. For widows aged 80 years and above, the pension amount is Rs.500 per month.

Eligibility under IGNWPS 

There are two criteria to be eligible for IGNWPS: 

  • The beneficiary should be a widow aged 40 to 79 years. 
  • The beneficiary must belong to a low-income (below poverty line) household under the criteria prescribed by the government of India. 

Exclusions under Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme

There are some points of exclusions under the IGNWPS: 

  • If the widow gets remarried, she becomes ineligible under the IGNWPS  
  • If the widow attains a level of income above the line of poverty. 

Online Application Process for IGNWPS 

These are the steps to apply for IGNWPS online: 

  1. Download the UMANG app or visit its website. 
  1. Login using your mobile number and enter the OTP. 
  1. After logging in, search for NSAP. 
  1. Tap on “Apply Online” button. 
  1. Fill all the basic details like name, photo, and choose the mode of payment. 
  1. Click on the “Submit” button. 

Offline Application Process for IGNWPS 

These are steps to apply for IGNWPS in person: 

  1. Visit the Gram Panchayat or Block office in the rural area and municipality/ municipal council in the case of urban area and submit the filled application form. 
  1. The application will be verified by a verification officer under the supervision of an authorized officer. 
  1. A recommendation for sanction will be made if the application form is verified. 
  1. The Gram Sabha or Ward Sabha will discuss the applications and recommendations. 
  1. If the time limit of discussion exceeds, the recommendations will be directly submitted to the Sanctioning Authority under intimation to the Municipality or Gram Panchayat. 
  1. The Sanctioning Authority will issue a sanction order to convey the approval of application form. 
  1. Every beneficiary who is sanctioned under the NSAP scheme will be issued a pension passbook containing the details of sanction order and disbursement details. 
  1. At the Gram Panchayat, Ward, or Municipal office, the list of beneficiaries will be displayed. The list will be updated every three months. 
  1. Through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) the pension amount is directly transferred to the beneficiary’s bank account.

  1. An affidavit duly attested by a Judicial Magistrate or Executive Magistrate, declaring that the applicant is not in receipt of any pension or financial assistance from any other source.
