Registration of Marriage in Jammu and Kashmir 

To register a marriage, the couples must apply to the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) having jurisdiction over the area where the marriage was solemnised or where either spouse has resided for at least six months prior to the marriage.  

Eligibility for Marriage Application Certificate 

To be eligible for marriage certificate following conditions must be complied: 

  1. Both bride and groom should be citizens of India. 
  1. Either of the spouse should be a permanent resident of Jammu and Kashmir. 
  1. The age of groom must be 21 years or more and the age of bride must be 18 years. 
  1.  Both individuals must be unmarried, with no living spouse. 

Documents Required for Marriage Registration Certificate 

  1. Properly filled in application form 
  1. Proof of residence 
  1. Age verification through birth certificates of groom and bride 
  1. Panchayat report 
  1. 4 passport-size photographs per person (bride and groom) 
  1. In case of a widow or widower intending to remarry, a death certificate of the deceased spouse must be provided. 
  1. In the case of a divorce, an order or decree from the competent court must be submitted. 
  1. Police verification after Form A submission. 

Jammu and Kashmir Hindu Marriage Registration 

  1. It is mandatory to register Hindu marriages performed in the state with the Registrar of Marriages. 
  1. Tehsildars of their respective Tehsils or Niabats should be the Registrar of marriages. 
  1. If tehsildar is absent, then Naib-tehsildar will serve as the Registrar of marriages. 
  1. The Hindu couple must submit the marriage registration application in the prescribed form to the Registrar of the local area where the marriage was performed. 
  1. Both parties must appear in person before the Registrar to apply, after which the marriage will be registered and recorded in the Hindu Marriage Register. 
  1. If the Registrar is satisfied with the application, the marriage will get registered, otherwise it will get rejected. 

Registration Fee and Processing Time 

This whole process of registering a marriage in Jammu and Kashmir will be processed within 30 days, excluding government holidays. 

The fee of registration for a marriage is Rs.100 whereas the fee to obtain a certified copy from the Hindu Marriage Registrar is Rs.25.

  1. Go to the official Jammu and Kashmir government services website (''Jansugam'') and click on the “login” button. 
  1. You will be redirected to the “Meri Pehchaan” website. 
  1. Fill up all the required details such as mobile number, OTP, name, gender, and date of birth. 
  1. Create new password and click on “verify”. 
  1. After logging in on the left-hand side, choose the option “apply for services” 
  1. From the list of services, choose “Application for Marriage Certificate by Registrar of Marriages”. 
  1. Fill the application form and click on “Submit”. 

Offline Application Procedure for Marriage Certificate 

Visit the nearest Tehsil office and collect the application form and submit it after filling all the details.

The application for marriage certificate can be tracked online on the official ''Jansugam'' portal. For tracking the application, the applicant needs to fill in the registration ID and date of registration.
