List of Required Identification Papers:

Given below is the list of identification papers that are necessary to establish an individual’s identity as Bhutanese, Nepalese or a citizen of India in case they are entering Bhutan, Nepal or India by air.

For Indian Nationals:

  • A National Passport that is valid.
  • Photo ID card that has been provided by the Indian government or State government or Union Territory Administration to their employees/Voter ID card provided by the Election Commission of India.
  • Emergency Certificate that has been provided by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
  • Identity Certificate that has been provided by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
  • Individuals above the age of 65 or below the age of 15 will not have to provide approved documents of identity but will have to furnish a document with their photograph confirming their identity and age such as Driving License, CGHS Card, PAN Card and Ration Card and so on.
  • Children who are between the ages of 15 to 18 may be allowed to travel between Nepal/Bhutan and India based on the identity Certificate provided by their School Principal.

For Bhutanese/Nepalese Nationals:

  • Valid National Passport.
  • Certificate of Nepalese Citizenship (for Nepalese nationals).
  • Certificate of Bhutanese Citizenship (for Bhutanese nationals).
  • Voter Identification Card for Nepalese nationals that has been issued by the Election Commission of Nepal.
  • Voter Identification Card for Bhutanese nationals that has been issued by the Election Commission of Bhutan.
  • When necessary, individuals will have to provide a photo-identity certificate that is of limited validity. This document will have to be issued by the Royal Nepalese Mission in India.

Visa exemption refers to the process of entering a country without having a visa .It is the same thing as visa-free entry. Not all countries get visa-free entry.     According to the Union Minister of State for Tourism, India will be issuing 5 lakh free visas to foreign tourists on a first come-first serve basis. This initiative has been taken to boost tourism in the country.   • Regular international flight operations will resume in India from 27 March

    On 8 March, the Civil Aviation Ministry announced that regular international flight operations will resume from 27 March. The Government of India will resume scheduled commercial international passenger services to/from India from 27 March following recognition of greater vaccination coverage throughout the world and in consultation with the stakeholders. Previously, on 28 February, the ban on regular international flights was extended by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) until further orders. However, the DGCA stated those flights operating under air bubble agreements and foreign cargo flights, will operate as scheduled. In India, the scheduled international flight services have been suspended since 23 March 2020. However, since July 2020, special international flights have been operating between India and about 35 other countries under air bubble arrangements.

    The President of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) has requested the Government of India to resume e-visas and multiple entry visas that had been blocked, notably from source markets such as the United Kingdom and Canada. He further appealed Government for extending the free Tourist Visa’s validity until 31 March 2024 without imposing a ceiling of 5 lakh free tourist visas.

  • Indians get free visa admittance to Maldives for Business Visits

    The Maldives government has begun the process of granting Indian nationals visa-free entry for business visits for a duration not exceeding the visa-free period of 90 days. The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Indians visiting the island country for business purposes will be eligible for free visa admittance from 1 February. This new arrangement is stipulated in the Agreement on the Facilitation of Visa Arrangements between the Government of India and the Government of Maldives, signed in December 2018. The Maldives is qualified for a reciprocal arrangement, and hence, multiple entries, non-inhabitant, and business visas will be granted to Indian nationals and Maldives for 90 days within six months.

    According to the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs, any Indian national with an approved business visa may extend their visa for up to 180 days during a calendar year. This is along with the 90-day visa-free period specified in the bilateral agreement.
