    What is a Visa?

    Visa is a kind of official document or certificate of endorsement on your passport indicating that you are allowed to enter, leave and stay in a specific country for a specified period of time or permanently. It can be a separate certificate with a stamp marked on your passport. Visas are issued by the immigration authorities of a foreign country after checking and verifying all your credentials properly. Once, you get a visa means you are permitted to enter a country and stay there for a specific period of time. However, the permission received through visa is temporary and subject to approval from the immigration officer at the entry point.

    What are the Types of Visa in India

    There are different types of visas issued by immigration authorities of a country which include –

    Single entry Visas remains valid only for one visit to a particular country while Multiple Entry Visas permit any number of visits to a particular country within its validity tenure.

    Tourists Visas are mainly for the purpose of traveling from one country to another.

    Residence Visa gives permits extended stay at a particular country. But, it does not give permission to take up employment in that country.

    Work Visa permits to you stay and take up employment in a particular country for a specific period of time. This type of visa is also known as work permit visa.

    Electronic Visas are not issued as certificates. Rather, permission is recorded in a computer.

    How to Apply for a Visa?

    You can apply for a visa both online and offline. In case of offline visa application, usually you need to download the application form and fill it with required details. Different countries may have different application procedures for applying for visas. Many countries may not accept offline visa application. Also, the cost involved in applying for a visa also differ from countries to countries.

    Visa status check can be done online. In order to check your visa status online, you need to visit the visa status enquiry section of a particular consulate and keep certain information handy with you. To know you passport visa status, you may be required to put the following information:

In addition to the above, applicants will also have to furnish a guarantee certificate from the bank regarding their financial standing. Yes, this Visa can be extended.
    6. ‘X’ entry Visa for foreigners who are of Indian origin 5 years Multiple Entry Proof that the applicant is of Indian origin. Yes, this Visa can be extended.

    List of Required Identification Papers:

    Given below is the list of identification papers that are necessary to establish an individual’s identity as Bhutanese, Nepalese or a citizen of India in case they are entering Bhutan, Nepal or India by air.

    For Indian Nationals:

    • A National Passport that is valid.
    • Photo ID card that has been provided by the Indian government or State government or Union Territory Administration to their employees/Voter ID card provided by the Election Commission of India.
    • Emergency Certificate that has been provided by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
    • Identity Certificate that has been provided by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
    • Individuals above the age of 65 or below the age of 15 will not have to provide approved documents of identity but will have to furnish a document with their photograph confirming their identity and age such as Driving License, CGHS Card, PAN Card and Ration Card and so on.
    • Children who are between the ages of 15 to 18 may be allowed to travel between Nepal/Bhutan and India based on the identity Certificate provided by their School Principal.

    For Bhutanese/Nepalese Nationals:

    • Valid National Passport.
    • Certificate of Nepalese Citizenship (for Nepalese nationals).
    • Certificate of Bhutanese Citizenship (for Bhutanese nationals).
    • Voter Identification Card for Nepalese nationals that has been issued by the Election Commission of Nepal.
    • Voter Identification Card for Bhutanese nationals that has been issued by the Election Commission of Bhutan.
    • When necessary, individuals will have to provide a photo-identity certificate that is of limited validity. This document will have to be issued by the Royal Nepalese Mission in India.

    • For children between the ages of 10 to 18, a photo identity card provided by the Principal of their School is needed as long as parents have valid travel certificates and documents. For children (Bhutanese and Nepalese nationals) below the age of 10, such documents are not required.

    Visa exemption refers to the process of entering country without having a visa .It is the same thing like visa free entry. Not all countries get visa free entry. Visa free entries allowed between two countries based on their mutual agreement. For example, certain commonwealth countries do not require tourist visas to enter to other commonwealth countries.     • Home Minister to sign a MoU on revised travel arrangements with Bangladesh

      In a bid to ease visa restrictions for citizens from Bangladesh, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on revised travel arrangements will be signed between both the countries during Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to the country. It needs to be mentioned that Bangladesh has been pushing for travel restrictions for senior citizens to be eased and concessions being offered to Muktijoddhas. In the past as well, India has offered Bangladeshi nationals a lot of benefits when it comes to visas. In 2014, the Indian government had relaxed visa restrictions for citizens from Bangladesh who were above the age of 65 and below the age of 13. At that time, the government had approved the issuance of five-year multiple entry visas. In 2016, of all the medical visas issued by India as many as 99,799 were given to Bangladeshi nationals, which were the most issued to a particular country.

      During the visit, Rajnath Singh is expected to meet Sheikh Hasina, the Bangladeshi Prime Minister as well as Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to discuss various issues. A MoU on the training of Bangladeshi police officers in India is also likely to be signed.

    • Citizens of Philippines can visit Taiwan without a visa

      Taiwan has extended its trial visa exemption thereby allowing Filipinos to visit the country visa-free for another year. As per a statement released by the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) visa-free entry for citizens from the Philippines will continue until 31 July 2019 following which it will be reviewed. The policy was implemented on a trial basis from 1 November 2017 to 31 July 2018. To qualify, for the visa-free policy, a Filipino would require to need to have a passport with remaining validity of at least six months from the date of entering the country, a return ticket, having no criminal record in Taiwan along with a proof of accommodation.

    • Indian citizens who marry foreign nationals abroad can get their visa converted to X2 visa

      As per changed rules, Indian citizens who marry foreign nationals can now get their valid visa converted to X2 visa. The decision was taken after Union Minister Rajnath Singh recently allowed a request of a Ghaziabad woman to clear her X2 visa following her visa to a Filipino man. It needs to be mentioned that till date, conversion of visas was allowed to only those couples whose marriages were conducted within the country. The change in rules is expected to streamline the entire process that is involved when it comes to conversion of tourist/business/employment/student visa to X2 visa. It is noteworthy to mention here that the move to allow the granting of X2 visa to foreign nationals who get married to an Indian would not be offered to nationals from Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq, and Pakistan as well as to citizens of Pakistani origins and stateless persons.

    • India relaxes visa rules for ‘Muktijoddhas’

      In a bid to honour the freedom fighters from Bangladesh who fought in the 1971 Liberation war and were part of the allied forces during the 1971 India Pakistan war, India has eased the visa conditions. As per the Home Ministry, freedom fighters better known as ‘Muktijoddhas’ who were aged between 13 and 19 years at the time of the war will now be able to avail five-year multiple tourist visas. This facility was till now provided to only those muktijoddhas who were aged 19 years at the time of the war. An official of the home ministry stated that the cutoff date for availing the tourist visa has been set for April 2017. It needs to be mentioned that the development comes after Dhaka lowered the age limit for Indian citizens. It is worth mentioning that Bangladesh is set to have its general elections later this year.

    • India launches online event clearance system

      To grant security clearance to foreigners who want to attend conferences, seminars and workshops held in India, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has recently launched an online event clearance system. The system will enable Indian missions abroad to issue conference visa to foreign nationals who intend to attend any of the above mentioned events held in India.

      Indian Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba stated that the entire of issuing conference visa will be paperless and standardized. He added that the system will be helpful in effective monitoring and result in timely disposal of applications. Gauba informed that the officials of the foreigners division have recently brought several successful initiatives related to Overseas Citizenship of India and foreigners’ registration.

      Prior to the introduction of the online system, organizers were required to apply for the clearance on a physical form and needed to provide documents to support their application. It needs to be mentioned that once the conference visa is approved, a three month single entry business visa is granted to the individual which is valid for six months.

    • Chess prodigy from India caught in visa battle

      A nine-year old chess prodigy named Shreyas Royal has been caught up in a visa battle in the United Kingdom as his father’s work visa is set to expire soon. Shreyas, the son of Jitendra and Anju Singh has won a series of chess championships in the country after the family moved to London from Bangalore in the year 2012. Shreyas’s father who works as a IT project manager with Tata Group was offered a fixed-term contract in the company’s UK office, which is to lapse on September 10.

      The family has appealed to the UK home office for indefinite leave to remain ILR in the country as their son is a national asset. The appeal made to the Home Office has been backed by Julian Simple and Dominic Lawson. While Simple has trained two of the English grandmasters, Lawson is the president of the English Chess Federation.

    • Indian Govt Launches Online Visa Service Platform

      The Government of India recently launched a web application called the e-FRRO (e-Foreigners Regional Registration Office) to facilitate quicker and seamless visa services for foreigners.

      Foreigners visiting the country can register themselves and dispenses with the need to visit a Foreigners Registration Office (FRO), which was the norm until now.

      This application was launched on 13th April, 2018 with the intention of providing a transparent and centralized online platform through which foreign nationals can avail immigration services. Among the services available are visa registration, conversion of visa, visa extension as well as exit permits.

      Since the applications can be submitted and tracked online, it does away with the need for middlemen or agents. The Government hoped to have over 27 visa and immigration related services available on the app shortly.

    • Foreign tourists coming to India can get visa extension online

      All foreign tourists who visit India will now be able to extend their tourist visa online and do not have to physically visit the Foreigners Registration Office or the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRO/FRRO).

      The online registration or extension of visas can be done through the e-FRRO service in a hassle-free and convenient manner. Through this interface, there will be as many as 27 visa and immigration services that will be available to foreigners. All of these services can be availed online.

      This service was recently launched by Rajnath Singh, Home Minister, and will allow all foreign tourists to go for a ‘cashless and paperless’ visa system. The main objective behind this move is to be able to give people touring the India from other countries a fast and efficient visa system. To use this portal, there is a need to register and create a user ID, after which all services can be availed online at the click of a button. Some of the services include visa extension, registration, exit permit, and the like. The e-FRRO service has already been running well in cities such as mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, since February.

    • Visa Day to be celebrated on June 6 in India

      US Consul-General George H Hogeman has announced that the Visa Day will be celebrated in India on June 6. The Visa Day is celebrated to celebrate education ties between India and the United States (US). Students who have applied for a study visa for the first time will have to appear in person for an interview with the consular officer. Hogeman has advised the students to listen carefully to the questions asked at the time of the visa interview and reply them with real answers. He further revealed that every sixth international student in the US is from India. At present more than 166,000 Indian students are enrolled in US institutions of higher education. Hogeman urged students to be aware of fraudulent agents as no one can guarantee you a visa. He advised students to be aware when they receive a message with fraud indicators. The US Embassy is in Delhi while its four consulates are present in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

      The procedure for granting an e-visa on the official website are executed with complete transparency and publicity. The time to process an e-visa application is within 3 working days. However, talking about Vietnam in specific, it started permitting tourists from about 40 different countries for applying e-visas on February 01, 2017. This includes Japan, China, Germany, the UK, the US, Sweden, and Korea as well.

      Recently, the government decided to extend its e-visa issuance to 6 other countries, which include Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Netherlands, and the UAE. Visitors with their e-visas can easily enter through 13 international border entries via land or 7 ports and 8 international airports.
