  • Suzuki V-Strom 650 Likely to be Launched in September in India

Suzuki Motor Corporation - a multinational vehicle manufacturer based in Japan - is planning to launch the V-Strom 650 in the first half of September. To this end, the company has alerted couple of dealers in the country to prepare for the event. Showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo, this medium-weight adventure motorcycle will be assembled in India. While the launch was initially scheduled in July 2018, it was pushed back in September so as to ensure that the Burgan Street got most of the attention. Taking its design cues from the V-Strom 1000, the V-Strom 650 will be powered by a 650cc, liquid-cooled, V-Twin engine which offers accesible torque. Available in 2 variants - Standard and 650XT, the Japanese adventure bike will feature ABS along with traction control system as a standard. The 650 XT version will carry additional off-road equipment such as engine protection, spoke wheels, and hand guards. Sporting a twin-spar alloy frame, the suspension duties will be handled by a conventional telescopic fork in the front while a monoshock with rebound adjustment and a remote preload adjuster will be featured at the rear end.

Since Suzuki intends to price the motorcycle competitively in the Indian market, the bike will likely be assembled at the Haryana facility of the company. There are speculations that Suzuki will only introduce the adventure-focused XT variant of the V-Strom 650 in India with an ex-showroom price range from Rs.7.5 lakh to Rs.7.7 lakh. This will be the third motorcycle - after the Hayabusa and the GSX-S750 - from the company that will be locally assembled.

  • Bajaj Auto Plans to Venture Commuter Bike Sector in Next 2 Years

Even though Bajaj Auto made its mark in the entry-level, sports, and super sports bike segments, it failed to capture the market in the commuter motorcycle segment. While motorcycles like CT 100, Platina, Dominar 400, Pulsar, Avenger, and KTM continued doing well, the V and Discover 125 performed worse than the standards set by the company for itself. Therefore, with an aim to strengthen the existing lineup within the next 2 years, Bajaj Auto is gearing up to make a comeback to the sector.

Although the company’s sales slightly declined during the FY 2017-18, its motorcycle exports witnessed a 14.5% growth to approximately 1.4 million units in FY2018. Furthermore, the three-wheeler exports of Bajaj Auto increased by 38.9% to stand at 267,820 units in the current financial year. While the company’s total revenue from exports stood at Rs.7,880 crore in FY 2017, the figures jumped to Rs.9,703 crore in FY 2018-19. This growth can be attributed to the robust sales in the ASEAN region due to product launches as well as in Africa after the economic recovery in Nigeria.

  • Honda Unveils the CRF450L

Honda has unveiled a street-legal dirt bike model, CRF450L. The bike is set to be launched in 2019 around the world. The motocross bike comes with a 450cc engine and 6-speed transmission.

The build of the engine is similar to that of the CRF450R but has a few features that set it apart. These features include slight differences in clutch design and a lithium-ion battery.

Honda’s range of dirtbikes before the CRF450L was limited to the Africa Twins, CRF250L and CRF1000L.

The CRF450L will help build Honda’s dirt bike range and will make a significant impact on Honda’s 2019 portfolio. However, the possibility of the bike making its way to the Indian market appear to be unlikely.

  • Quicker Emergency Care Response in Delhi With Bike Ambulances

During the Union Budget 2018-19, the Government has announced that it will not only increase the number of beds in the hospital, but will also introduce ‘First Responder Vehicles’ in the country so that citizens can receive faster emergency medical attention. To help emergency care reach the farthest corners of the country, the government will launch bike ambulances that can traverse through congested lanes and remote locations.

Currently in the first phase of this plan, 16 bike ambulances outfitted with at least a 200cc engine are set to be rolled out in East Delhi which is presumably the most congested part of the city. While these motorcycle ambulances will carry a first aid kit, the government is planning to introduce green bikes that cause less pollution and can reach any location even during the monsoons. With a total budget of Rs.15 crore, the government is also planning to introduce mobile van clinics across the city.

  • IRDAI Scales Down Third-Party Premiums for Motor Vehicles

Since it is mandatory for all vehicles in India to have third-party insurance, the premiums of cars and bikes for the same have been recently revised by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). While the rates of commercial vehicles such as trucks have witnessed a rise, most of the third-party premiums match the exposure draft that was released a while ago. In response to this, the transport lobbies within the country have reportedly threatened to go on a strike in order to oppose the 20% to 30% rise in premiums towards goods-transporting vehicles. On the other hand, the third-party premiums for bikes and cars have been reduced by the IRDAI effective from 1 April 2018. This move is expected to reduce the premiums for cars under 1,000cc by 10%, and for two-wheelers below 75cc by 25%.

With the shift from motorcycles to scooters, the company has sold 93,573 units in February 2018 compared to 69,020 units in February 2017. This 35.6% rise in sales further emphasises the fact that the scooter industry consists of 70% male users while only a 30% users are female. While scooters held only a 10-11% share in the two-wheeler market 10 years back, the market share currently stands at 35%. The domestic two-wheeler sales of TVS Motor Company has witnessed a 33.5% growth in sales in February 2018 compared to February 2017.
