According to a study conducted by a group of researchers, 64% of households who earn less than Rs.10,000 per month do not hold a Jan Dhan account. The survey consisted of 3,000 households in the same category and the researchers from the Centre of Sustainable Development from the Azim Premji University have pointed out that accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana have not been opened for 64% of the beneficiaries.

Among the total number of people who hold a Jan Dhan account, only 30% of them have received amount transfers to their account. The survey was conducted in collaboration with various civil society organisations in the country and a detailed phone survey was conducted of 4,000 workers from the unorganised sectors.

Update from India Govt about Covid-19

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana scheme, amounting to Rs.1.7 lakh crore, was launched by the Government of India to ease the economic challenges faced by the poor due to the slowdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. As part of this scheme, over 8 crore beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will be provided a total of 3 LPG gas cylinders between the months of April to June 2020. These 14.2 kg LPG cylinders will be provided totally free of cost. The cost of this to the government will be Rs.13,000 crore.

  • Central Government credits Rs.500 to over 4.07 crore women Jan Dhan account holders

    The Central Government of India credited Rs.500 to the account of over 4.07 crore women who have a Jan Dhan account in their name as a part of a relief package due to lockdown ordered as a result of outbreak of Coronavirus in India.

    The amount will reflect in the account of the women by the end of the first week of April.

    Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced that Rs.500 each will be credited to the account of women Jan Dhan account holders.

    The ministry said that the government has prepared a schedule of payment withdrawal from banks on the basis of the last digit of the accounts in order to allow people to practice social distancing and withdrawal of money on a timely basis.
