Mobile Passport Seva Application (or mPassport Seva App)

The mPassport Seva (or the Mobile Passport Seva) is exclusively designed for the Indians, who are solely interested in passport-based information. It is a user-friendly and lightweight app that offers specific information about the following:

The Passport Seva project is executed by the MEA’s (Ministry of External Affairs) CPV (Consular, Passport, and Visa) division and Indian Government to provide all the services associated to passport in a transparent, convenient, and speedy manner.

It is one of the biggest projects being executed under the NeGP (National e-Governance Plan) in private- public-partnership with TCS (Tata Consultancy Services). The project is servicing the nationals through 77+ Passport Offices across India.

However, MEA planned to offer mobile services to the public and that’s when the concept of mPassport app was developed and launched. The app offers a wide range of services to all the smartphone users. The mPassport Seva app is available for iOS, Android, Blackberry, and Windows platforms.

Features Of mPassport Seva App

  • The app guides or gives information about the several steps that are involved to acquire a passport-related service. Say for example, where to ask if the customer has a concern or a query.
  • A user can easily search for a DPC (District Passport Cell) or PSK (Passport Seva Kendra). In fact, a citizen who is living overseas can also look for relevant details about the Posts/Missions abroad.
  • For some specific districts and states, a user can effortlessly search for his/her respective Police Station too.
  • The app’s Fee Calculator option also helps a user to get information about the fee, service charges, and the submission mode.
  • A user can keep a track of his/her passport application status by just entering the date of birth and file number. If the passport is dispatched, the app also offers an option to track its delivery status.

  • MEA Swaraj states that no compromise was made on security aspects while developing the mPassport Seva app

    External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has said that no compromise was made on security aspects with regard to passport applications filed through the new mobile app called mPassport Seva. She added that any attempts made to get fake passports by filing applications from cyber cafes will be rejected. The minister while replying to a query during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha stated that once the data centre receives the application, it will be automatically deleted from the sender’s phone. Apart from this, the data centre will automatically reject fake applications filed through cyber cafes, the MEA said. It needs to be mentioned that the mPassport app which was launched on June 26 had seen over one million downloads in just two days. The app which is available both on Android and iOS platforms is laced with facilities like applying, paying and scheduling appointments to acquire a passport. Sushma Swaraj stated that a total of 67,500 applications were received till date after the launch of the mobile app. While replying to a related query, she stated that though there was staff shortage it has never come in the way of passport services. She stated that the rules were simplified for applicants by striking off irrelevant questions from the application process and the entire process is being streamlined.

  • Residents residing outside their native state can now apply for a passport using mPassport Seva app

    With the Union government simplifying the procedure of applying for a passport, the individuals who reside outside their native state can now apply for a passport by providing their permanent address in their application form at any Regional Passport Office (RPO) of their choice. This was informed by Prasanth Chandran, the Kochi Regional Passport Officer who added that online and mobile applications have also been made available to the applicants. As per the new rules introduced, the applicant can now choose the Regional Passport Office (RPO) and the desired Passport Seva Kendra under the RPO of his/her choice where they can submit their applications. This can be done without worrying about the present residential address mentioned in the application form. Police verification would be carried out in the address mentioned in the application form and the passport would also be sent on the same address.

  • mPassport Seva App allows applicants to apply for a passport from anywhere

    With External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj launching the mPassport Seva app on Tuesday, applicants can now apply for a passport from anywhere in the country. The app which was launched on the occasion of the Sixth Passport Seva Divas is available on the iOS and Android platforms offer applicants the facilities of applying, paying and scheduling appointments for passport services. The recently launched app allows applicants to choose the Regional Passport Office (RPO) which in return enables them to submit their application in their desired Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) irrespective of the fact that the address mentioned in the form falls within the jurisdiction of the selected RPO or not. The initiative undertaken by the ministry is expected to benefit those applicants who are not able to apply for a passport given that they do not reside in their original place of residence.
