Buying a car still remains one of the most cherished dreams of a middle-class Indian. With the easy availability of car financing options today, getting ownership of your dream car is not too far-fetched an idea as well. With the boom in the Indian automobile market, car manufacturers have displayed an array of high-end and conservative models to suit the varying needs of customers.

When looking to buy a vehicle, you may come across classifications of cars based on their segments and body shapes. If this has got you all confused, worry not. Here we try to demystify the classification of cars, so that your car purchase journey is eased to a large extent.

Different Types Of Cars In The Market

The cars available in the Indian automobile market can be broadly classified into the following types:

Sedan Sedan - Also referred to as saloon in the UK, this type of car has four doors and an unmistakable trunk design. The car has a 3-box configuration, wherein each of the boxes are used categorically for cargo, passenger, and engine. The subtypes in sedans are referred to as notchback, compact, fastback, and sub-compact. Some of the sedans available in India are Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City, and Hyundai Elantra.

Hatchback Hatchback - A hatchback has a two-box configuration with a rear door that can be opened outwards. Apart from the rear door, these cars have four doors. There are two-door hatchbacks in the market as well. Some of the popular four-door hatchbacks in the country are Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, Hyundai Grand i10, and Renault Kwid. Hatchbacks such as the MINI Cooper S 3-door and the upcoming Volkswagen Polo GTI are noteworthy as well.

MUV MUV - A multi-utility vehicle (MUV) is also referred to as multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). These ‘people carriers’ have spacious interiors and offer more comfort for passengers with two to three rows of seating. Also, the third row of seats can be reconfigured if needed. The vehicle has a one-box configuration as well. The Maruti Suzuki Eeco, Maruti Suzuki Omni, and Datsun GO+ are prominent cars of this type.

Coupe Coupe - This is a two-door car with a roof that is fixed in place. It has a more sporty look and usually has only 2 seats. The rear is also smaller than average. Today, cars with four doors are referred to as coupes as well, as long as they have coupe-like proportions and a sporty appeal. Some of the popular coupes in India are Audi R8, Ford Mustang, and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe.

SUV SUV - A sports utility vehicle (SUV) is a large car that has a body-on-frame chassis, provides off-road facilities, and has increased ground clearance. The definition of an SUV has also evolved over time, and now, both soft-roaders and off-roaders are referred to as SUVs. Some of the prominent off-roader SUVs in the country are Land Rover Discovery Sport, Mahindra Thar, and Mahindra Scorpio. The Renault Duster, Honda CR-V, and Skoda Yeti are some notable soft-roader SUVs.

Crossover Crossover - A crossover is essentially a vehicle that is a combination of an SUV and a hatchback. Crossovers have soft-roading capabilities and a unibody construction, unlike SUVs that have body-on-frame platform. Crossovers such as Volvo S60 Cross Country, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, and Hyundai i20 Active are notable in the crossover range.

Convertible Convertible - A convertible is often referred to as a roadster or cabriolet. This car has a special roof structure that allows enclosed driving as well as open-air facilities. The roof can be a retractable hard top or a soft folding one. Some convertibles available in India are Ferrari California T, Mercedes-AMG SLC 43, and Audi A3 Cabriolet.

Importance Of Car Insurance

Once you have decided to buy a specific model of a car, you should narrow down on a suitable car insurance policy. It is often found that people do not lay as much focus on identifying the most appropriate insurance coverage as is done on finding the best car for their needs. With the advent of online car insurance sales, it is now possible to effortlessly compare car insurance policies at neutral financial websites and even make a purchase in a matter of minutes. The documentation required for motor insurance purchase is also minimal. The fact that insurers offer attractive discounts on online car insurance policies only makes this form of insurance purchase the most desirable proposition.
