Online money transfer has been a blessing right from the moment it was introduced to the Indian banking system. The State Bank of Travancore or SBT has made it possible for it’s customers to carry out quick online payments via NEFT (National Electronic Fund Transfer) and RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement), two electronic payment services introduced by the RBI. Both these services employ a unique code known as the IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) which is essential to the working of both these modes of payment. IFSC codes not only help regulate the flow of funds but also help identify the sender and receiver bank during a monetary transaction.
The IFSC is an 11 character alphanumeric code which can be broken down into three parts. The first 4 characters represent the name of the bank, the fifth character is always zero and the last 6 characters identify the specific branch. So, for instance, the State Bank of Travancore IFSC code for Pondicherry is SBTR0000601. Here, the first 4 characters ‘SBTR’ represent the name of the bank, the fifth character is always zero and the last 6 characters represent the specific branch of SBT.
The IFSC and MICR code of any branch of State Bank of Travancore can be found online on several third party websites providing this information. You may also find the IFSC code of an SBT branch printed on the cheque leaves of cheque books issued by the bank. Alternately, there is an easier way to look for SBT IFSC codes, which is, by visiting BankBazaar. Go to the bottom of the main page of the website where you will find a tab labelled ‘Bank IFSC Code’. Click on that and you will be re-directed to another page which will ask you to input details like the name of the bank, the state and district it is located in and the particular branch of the bank that you’re looking for. Once all that has been input, the page will automatically display the required information like the IFSC and MICR code of the bank branch that you’re looking for, along with the address and contact details of the branch.
Transferring money using NEFT or RTGS is extremely simple and takes only a few minutes to do. Customers of State Bank of Travancore can easily transfer money to any SBT account or any other account held with any other bank participating in the NEFT network.
NEFT of National Electronic Funds Transfer is an electronic payment system introduced by the RBI to enable individuals and banks to easily transfer money to other accounts held with NEFT enabled banks. Here, RBI acts as the service provider by helping transfer the credit to the other account. There is no minimum amount for an NEFT transaction, under retail or corporate internet banking. However, the maximum limit for an NEFT transaction under retail banking is fixed at Rs 5 lakh, while there is no maximum limit for NEFT transactions done under Corporate Internet Banking. The charges applicable for using the NEFT service are as follows:
|Up to Rs 1 lakh||Nil|
|Above Rs 1 lakh and up to Rs 2 lakh||Rs 17|

RTGS or Real Time Gross Settlement is another electronic payment system introduced by the RBI which has been designed especially for high value monetary transfers. Under RTGS, funds are transferred on a real time basis, which means that a request for a transfer is processed as soon as the instructions are received. So there is no waiting period for transactions like NEFT, making this payment method much quicker. The minimum amount to be transferred for an RTGS transaction is Rs 2 lakh, under retail banking as well as corporate internet banking. However, under retail banking, the maximum amount which can be transferred is Rs 5 lakh, while there is no maximum limit for an RTGS transaction done under corporate internet banking. With headquarters located in Thiruvananthapuram, the bank carries out operations across 18 states and 3 Union Territories, making it one of the premier banking institutions of India. A subsidiary of the State Bank Group, State Bank of Travancore enjoys a widespread trusted presence in Kerala where it was founded as Travancore Bank, back in 1945. Currently, the bank operates with a network of over 1500 branches and about 1600+ ATMs located across India. The suite of products and services offered by the bank include investment banking, consumer banking, retail banking, private banking, asset management, pensions and mortgages.
The State Bank of Travancore Employees Union (SBTEU) has urged the Centre to refrain from proceeding with the decision of merging SBT and associate banks with SBI. They have also requested SEBI and RBI to intervene in the matter.
The union stated that the government needs to take into account the views of the people, the Kerala Assembly, MPs from the state and customers/shareholders. They will also reinforce their disapproval with a hunger strike in the last week of September, Raj Bhavan march in October and Parliament Maha Dhara in November.
It was pointed out that the SBI management is rushing with the procedures for the merger, violating all norms and practices of transparency and good governance. SBI management has also announced that the merger would result in the shutting of 7,000 existing branches of the bank.
The Union pointed out that the move would adversely affect small customers and the entire productive sector, in addition to altering mass banking and national priorities.

The staff union of State Bank of Travancore (SBT) have opposed the decision of the State Bank of India (SBI) to merge its subsidiaries with itself.
SBI has sought approval from the Central Government to start negotiations with SBT, State Bank of Mysore (SBM), State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur (SBBJ), State Bank of Patiala (SBP) and State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) on the question of merger and acquisition. All these banks offer online transfer facilities through IFSC code.
However, the staff is not pleased. General secretary of SBT Employees Union KS Krishna said the customers of SBT will suffer after the merger as SBI will go global soon. He also pointed out that many SBT employees will lose their jobs if the merger takes place.
The union, however, is favourable towards the idea of the 5 State Bank subsidiaries coming together as one bank.
