The Jana Sanjivini stores are outlets where medicines are sold at reasonably lower prices than the existing market prices and operate under the Jana Sanjivini Scheme. The scheme functions under the purview of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education. The Jana Sanjivini scheme was introduced by the Government of Karnataka with an intent to provide superior-quality medicines to the poor at subsidised prices.
Medicines of all kinds, including those for diabetes, blood pressure, etc. are available at the Jana Sanjivini stores and at the moment, the stores are operational for 13 hours (between 8 a.m to 9 p.m) but will soon operate 24/7. These generic drug stores are maintained by HLL LifeCare Limited, a government enterprise. Generic drugs at the Jana Sanjivini stores are sold at a 50% discount while branded drugs are sold at a 10% discount. Surgical implants are yet to be sold at these stores but when it does, it will be sold at a 25% discount. The Jana Sanjivini stores are currently being set up in 40 hospitals out of which 14 hospitals will house diagnostic tests and medical imaging facilities.
HLL Lifecare will supply medicines to the Jana Sanjivini stores at prices approved by the Government of Karnataka and the Drugs Controller and Karnataka Drugs Logistics and Warehousing Society. To ensure that the medicines sold through the Jana Sanjivini are of superior quality, only medicines manufactured by reputable Indian pharmaceutical companies and multinational companies will be considered. Anyone who is uncertain about the quality of medicine sold at the Jana Sanjivini stores can approach any laboratory in Hubballi, Ballari, and Bengaluru through the department of State Drug Control. Under the Jana Sanjivini Scheme, around 748 drugs are available at the Jana Sanjivini outlets.
The Jana Sanjivini outlets are proposed to be launched in all the 176 taluks of Karnataka and 30 district headquarters. In Bengaluru, the stores will initially be commissioned at Bowring, KC General, and Victoria Hospitals. In Mangaluru, the Jana Sanjivini stores are presently operating at Wenlock Hospital and Lady Goschen Hospital.
