MSME stands for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. According to MSMED Act 2006, Micro, small and medium business units in Manufacturing and service sector falls under MSMEs. A manufacturing unit is classified under micro, small and medium enterprise based on the investment made on plant and machinery.
Manufacturing units with less than Rs.25 lakhs investment on plant and machinery is called a Micro unit. Business unit with above Rs.25 lakhs and below Rs.5 crores is called small business unit and enterprises with more than Rs.5 crores investment on plant and machinery is called medium business enterprise.
Under service sector, businesses are classified based on the investment in equipment. The investment on equipment doesn’t exceed Rs.10 lakhs for micro unit. Investment on equipment more than Rs.10 lakh and less than Rs. 2 crores is Small enterprise and a medium enterprise has investment on equipment more than Rs.2 crores but less than Rs.5 crores.
