You can use the credit card at the below-mentioned places to conduct transactions –
About how to use a credit card – it’s simple.
For processing a card-present transaction such as an ATM cash withdrawal and card-swiped transaction, you need to enter the 4-digit PIN.
For most of the online transactions, you need to enter your card details. The PIN is seldom asked for online transactions.
When you don’t pay the total outstanding amount on a credit card by the due date, you’re automatically opting for the revolving credit facility. This means the borrowed amount which is not repaid on time attracts interest or finance charge.
The interest charge is also applicable when you pay only the minimum amount due or anything less than the total amount due.
Further, cash withdrawals attract interest from the date of the transaction till the amount is repaid in full.
The interest rate is charged at a monthly percentage rate or an annual percentage rate (APR) and varies from card to card. The issuer will communicate the rate of interest at the time of card issuance.
Interest rates charged by top banks are listed below.Credit Card Issuer | Credit Card rate of interest on revolving credit |
---|---|
State Bank of India | Up to 3.35% per month |
HDFC Bank | 1.99% to 3.49% per month |
American Express Credit Card | 1.99% to 3.5% per month |
IndusInd Bank | 3.83% per month |
Citibank | 3.10% to 3.50% per month |
Axis Bank | 2.50% to 3.25% per month |
Kotak Mahindra Bank | 2.49% to 3.50% per month |
HSBC Bank | 1.99% to 3.30% per month |
ICICI Bank | 2.49% to 3.50% per month |
When managed properly, a credit card acts as an interest-free credit line. This means you don’t have to pay any interest if the borrowed amount is repaid in the stipulated time.
The period between a transaction date and the credit card bill payment due date is called the ‘Interest-Free Period’.
If you pay the transaction amount on or before the due date, you don’t have to pay any interest, hence the in-between period is termed as Interest-free period or grace period.
The grace period varies for each credit card transaction and the typical period ranges from 30 to 45 days. Transactions carried out at the beginning of your credit card billing cycle would provide you with a longer grace-period.
However, the grace period is not applicable if the previous month's due has not been paid in full.
Also, cash withdrawals using a credit card are not eligible for grace period. Interest on such transactions would be levied from the withdrawal date itself.
The interest-free period offered by top banks is as followsCredit Card Issuer | Credit Card Interest-free Period |
---|---|
State Bank of India | 20 to 50 days |
HDFC Bank | Up to 50 days |
American Express Credit Card | Up to 48 days |
IndusInd Bank | Up to 50 days |
Citibank | Up to 50 days |
Axis Bank | 20 to 50 days |
Kotak Mahindra Bank | Up to 48 days |
HSBC Bank | Up to 52 days |

Credit card statement (or credit card bill) is generated every 30/31 days. The bill generation date depends on the date on which the credit card is first issued, and the same date will be followed for the subsequent months.
Besides the bill amount which is also called the outstanding amount on the card, the statement also provides a detailed history of all the transactions conducted during the billing period.
It also reflects the total credit limit, available credit limit, cash limit, due date and other related information.
The statement is typically mailed to the cardholder’s registered e-mail every month. However, if the total outstanding balance is less than a certain cut-off, say Rs.200, no statement will be generated.
Credit card EMI is one of the useful features offered on credit cards. There are various options to use the EMI facility.
Credit cardholders with the first option can convert their purchases instantly into EMI while carrying out a transaction. However, the product/service or the retailer should have partnered with the card issuer.
The second option allows the users to convert any of the transactions or the total outstanding on the card into easy monthly installments (EMI).
However, the request for conversion should be made within a specific period from the date of the transaction, say 20-30 days.
While availing the facility, cardholders have the option to choose the repayment period which typically ranges from 3 to 24 months.
Some issuers offer 0% interest while the others charge a low or normal interest rate. Furthermore, a processing fee of 1-2% of the converted amount may also be levied.
Once you opt for the facility, you need to repay the EMI amount every month. The associated principal amount and the interest charge, if applicable, will be added to the minimum amount due on the card.

Let's discuss the elements on the front-side of a credit card.
Another latest feature that has been introduced by credit card issuers is the contactless payment feature. If your card has the feature, you will find a symbol similar to a Wi-Fi symbol on your card.

While some cards provide deals and discounts for shopping online, others are designed for in-store shopping. Further, there are co-branded Shopping credit cards that provide offers and rewards on specific brands or stores.
Shopping Credit Cards are typically affordable with a starting annual fee of Rs.500. The benefits offered on the cards including the welcome gifts, reward points, deals and discounts, etc., revolve round the shopping category.
Mostly providing air travel benefits, the Airline Credit Cards are best suited for frequent travelers. The features and benefits offered on the cards revolve around the air travel.
Reward points to air mile conversion, free flight tickets, complimentary airport lounge access, and accelerated rewards on air ticket booking, among others are some common features offered by Travel Credit Cards.

Q.Difference between a credit card and a debit card?
A. While a debit card acts as an instrument to withdraw money from your savings account or to make card-based transactions using the amount in your account, a credit card is a credit instrument that allows you to spend using the card and repay it later.
Q.Should I pay interest on all the purchases I make using a credit card?
A.No, you don’t have to pay interest on all the transactions. However, if you’re not repaying the due amount within the stipulated time, the unpaid due would attract interest along with all the new transactions, till the due amount is repaid in full.
Q. Can I use my credit card in other countries?
A.It depends on your card type. If your credit card is accepted globally, you can use it in other countries as mentioned by your creditor. However, a certain fee known as the foreign transaction fee will be charged for all the purchases made abroad.
Q.Difference between a VISA credit card and a Master Credit Card?
A.VISA and MasterCard are two leading payment gateway providers in India. Any credit card issued in India is either VISA-powered or MasterCard-powered or powered by any other payment network. From the cardholder point of view, there is no much difference. However, VISA and MasterCard may provide slightly different offers on each credit card.
Q.How many credit cards should I have?
A. The number one should own is not fixed. It depends on your financial ability and your spending behavior. However, ensure to manage all the cards properly. Use them responsibly, repay the outstanding on time and make sure none of them is affecting your credit score.
Q.How long does it take to get a credit card approved?
A. The banks typically state that they would take 21 days to disburse a credit card. However, depending on the applicant’s profile, availability of documents, verification checks, etc., it might also take a little longer than the stipulated time.
Q.What is a secured credit card?
A. A secured credit card is typically issued against a fixed deposit with the bank. The amount in the FD account serves as a security deposit in case the cardholder defaults on the credit card. Secured credit cards are ideal for those without any credit history and for those who are availing the credit card for the first time.
Q.What does 'minimum due' mean on a credit card statement?
A. The minimum amount due is the minimum amount a credit cardholder needs to pay in case he/she is not able to pay the total outstanding. It is typically 5% of the total outstanding amount on the card. Paying the minimum amount would save you from the late payment fee.
Q.Difference between credit limit and cash limit?
A. The credit limit is the total credit allotted for your credit card at the time of issuance. At any given point, you cannot spend beyond that limit.
On the other hand, cash limit is the maximum amount of credit available for cash withdrawal on the credit card. Typically, it’s a portion of the total credit limit on the card.
Q.If I make a late payment on my credit card, will it affect my credit score?
A. It depends on various factors – the number of days late, the number of instances and the amount due. Based on all this your credit card issuer would take a call about whether or not to report the same to the credit agencies. But once reported, it would certainly affect your credit score.
Q.Do credit cards offer protection against fraud?
A. Not all credit cards do, but there are quite a few credit cards that come with fraud liability protection cover.
If your card offers the protection, most of the fraudulent transactions that might happen on the card when it’s either lost or stolen will be covered. However, you need to intimate about the loss of the card immediately to the respective creditor.

Credit card and debit card transaction fee in European countries will be cut by about 40% if the deal between the European Commission and the payment networks MasterCard and Visa goes through.
Currently, the bank of the retailer, who is accepting the card payment in EU, pays an interchange fee (IF) to the cardholder's bank. The retailer's bank then passes the fee on to the retailer who further passes it to all consumers by including it in the final price of the product. The fee is even passed to those who do not use cards.
The interchange fee thus makes the business in EU countries anti-competitive as they offer higher prices for goods and services by the retailers accepting payments from credit cards issued outside the European Economic Area (EEA).
MasterCard and Visa hence proposed a deal with the EU to reduce the inter-regional interchange fees (IRIF) on card transactions made in the EEA locations by using a card not issued by EU banks.
If the deal gets approved the fee would be reduced to 0.3% from the current 1.9%.
The agreement will be applicable for a period of 5 years and 6 months from the time of approval. Any breach in the terms would lead to a fine of up to 10% of the company's worldwide turnover.
Once the new regulations are in place, Indian tourists visiting any of the 28 member nations of the EU can save a few extra dollars or euros on their credit card and debit card transactions.

With the RBI’s order, most of the banks have replaced both credit and debit cards with chip-based cards. Those who received the chip card are no longer able to access their old magnetic-stripe only credit cards starting 1st January.
The new chip-based cards also demanded an upgrade for the existing ATMs. The cash dispensers, which used to dispense the card soon after they read the details, now retain the card till the transaction is processed.
Users need to be aware of this update as there would be change in how they use the machine. Earlier, we used to simply swipe the card once for the verification, but now with the new chip cards, we need to leave the card in the slot throughout the transaction.
Some of the banks including Axis and SBI have sent an intimation to their customers regarding the change. Collecting the card before we leave the ATM is a point to note in all such messages.

The latest IDC Consumer PULSE study reveals that one-third of the Indian consumers consider the attractive deals and offers as the prime reasons for purchasing smartphones. They are also lured by the latest specifications that these new smartphones offer.
The factors that are making online retailers a favourite among smartphone buyers are the options like Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) and other popular offers and cashbacks on credit and debit cards. The overall comfort and convenience in online shopping is also a reason why almost 40% of Indian consumers prefer online purchases.
For offline consumers, although cash payment remains the most popular mode of transaction, there’s a steady growth in digital modes like debit and credit card payments. About 66% of offline customers assert that the ‘hands-on experience’ of the phone is the reason they stay away from online purchases.
In terms of phone specifications, customers are attracted mostly by the RAM and processing speed of the phone. Features like waterproofing and face unlock are yet to gain high popularity amongst the consumers.

Multiple banks in the country, mostly those in the public sector, are cutting down the number of credit card loans, personal loans, and other unsecured loans which don’t have collateral. This is being done as a way of keeping the non-performing assets (NPAs) in check.
The focus is now being shifted to home loans, loans against fixed deposits, and other retail credit types. Last year, the number and volume of unsecured credit card loans were very high. During this period, credit card advances stand at Rs.85,300 crore, a growth of 33% which is lower than the 39% year-on-year growth around the same time last year.
Also, the growth in the personal loans has dropped to 26% at Rs.5,58,200 crore. Surprisingly, last year around the same time personal loans were growing at a massive 40%. The governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that although asset quality reviews have high costs, the process has introduced a greater discipline in the assessment of credit, market risks, and operational risks.

The retail lending market has continued to grow across the country and among people in every age group. In the third quarter of 2018, there has been a 28% growth in the credit accounts compared to the figures in the 3rd quarter of 2017. The aggregate balance of all the retail lending products witnessed a growth of 21% during the period.
The growth has been caused primarily by the rise in the number of credit cards and personal loans. Also, in the tier-1 cities of the country, the most concentrated product has been credit cards and they account for close to three-fourths of the total share. Another interesting factor is that the growth has been driven mostly by Indians who fall in the age bracket of 30-49 years. These section of people also forms 56% of the total credit-active consumers and around 60% of the total balance in the market.
The current number of credit accounts stands at 107 million. Another good news is that other than loans against property, the delinquency rates for most major lending products dropped in numbers or remained stable during this quarter.

With the government encouraging digital payments, the number of digital transactions in the first six months of the current financial year stood at 11.8 billion, as per the data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).The digital transactions include payments made through both credit card and debit card, transactions done through prepaid wallets, immediate payment service (IMPS), Unified Payments Interface (UPI) app, Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) and National Automated Clearing House (NACH).
If the current pace continues, bankers and industry experts opine that the number may soon reach the current year target of 30 billion transactions with more number of new players entering the industry as well as with the emergence of new forms of digital payments.
The numbers achieved so far are attributed to the rising number of merchant offering digital payments such as card payments, adoption of national mobility card for toll and transit payments, promoting UPI and other payment apps through social media platforms and on the internet. The festive season and the offers provided by various online platform also contributed to the rise in the digital payments in the month of October and November. According to Amazon Pay of the total value of payments conducted on Amazon during the festive season sales, about 3/4th of the transactions have taken place digitally, which is 10% higher than previous year.
On the other hand, card transactions at point-of-sale terminals stood top in the non-cash payment category. About 2.9 billion credit card and debit card transactions were recorded followed by 2.1 billion mobile wallet payments and 1.5 billion UPI transactions.

A credit card is one of the most useful financial tools that can be used both by individuals and businesses to take care of their daily expenses. This is true for small and medium-sized enterprises too. Here are a few tips that the management of these enterprises should be aware of to get the maximum benefits from their organization’s credit card.
Individual ownership: If you decide to get credit cards for your employees individually to meet their official expenses, do bear in mind that these cards are usually issued in the name of the employees directly. So, these employees would be responsible for using the card safely and paying the dues on time.
Decide the payment mode: It’s better if you decide who would pay the outstanding on each credit card – whether it would be paid by the company or the individual employees.
Additional fees and charges: Let the employees know how the additional charges like late payment fee, interest amount, etc on their official credit cards would be handled. This would give them a clear idea about the ideal usage of the card.

If you use a credit card then you may be aware of all its features and benefits including the facility of balance transfer. Today, most major credit card issuers load their credit cards with this feature so that it acts as one of the prominent aspects that appeal to the customers. It allows you to transfer the outstanding balance from one credit account to another credit account. Usually, a small percentage of the transferred amount is charged as the transfer fee.
You may apply for this facility particularly for the following two advantages
Low interest: You can easily transfer the outstanding amount from a credit account that charges a high rate of interest to one that charges lower rates. This way, you save a substantial sum of money.
Debt consolidation: If you have multiple active credit cards, you can transfer the outstanding balance from all of them to a single one and then create a perfect repayment plan. This also cuts down the hassles of making multiple payments for multiple cards.

One of the biggest concerns about using a credit card is the high interest rates that it carries. A careless use of your credit card can cause you to bear a substantially high rate of interest which may give you multiple financial problems. So here are a few ways through which you can save yourself from paying a high interest on your credit card.
Pay your bills on time: Ensure that you pay your credit card dues in their entirety on or before the due date. If you miss the last date or don’t pay the full amount, you will have to pay a penalty in the subsequent months in the form of high interests.
Avoid cash withdrawal with your card: It’s a well-known fact that withdrawing cash at ATMs using your credit card attracts exorbitantly high rates of interest. So even if you have to withdraw some cash, keep it to the minimum and try your best to repay it as soon as possible.
EMIs: You get the option of converting high transactions into EMIs that attract relatively low rates of interest. However, it would be best for you to go for the no-cost EMI if it’s available, particularly for online transactions.
